Embrace the Republican Primary Season!

The primaries bring a mixture of excitement and angst to Republicans. On both the national and local levels, our candidates are out on the campaign trail. They are touting all of their personal and professional qualities as well as their achievements. Candidates are knocking on doors, making phone calls, and attending any event they can to make their candidacy known and secure our votes.

The primaries provide us a great opportunity to meet the candidates. Locally at least, we can ask them questions in order to flesh out their views and try to determine how each candidate would vote on any particular issue. As a result of the primary process, we are able to make an informed decision when we choose our candidates for the general election.

Almost invariably, however, the candidates also turn to negative ads attacking their opponents. If you believe the pundits, negative ads turn people off to the political process and Republicans may become discouraged watching candidates from their own party try to tear each other apart. So why do candidates resort to such negative ads? Pundits claim it is because negative ads work, although it could be argued that excessive negative ads were not effective in a recent local election.

Negative ads do serve a useful purpose. It is better for us as Republicans to discover our candidates’ weaknesses during the primaries rather than have our candidates be torn apart by Democrats in the general election. We must be careful, however, not to let the negative ads of Republicans discourage us to the point that we do not vote in the primary election at all, or that we consider voting for a Democrat. Remember, true Republicans adhere to a philosophy that is fundamentally at odds with other political parties.

2012 is going to be an exciting year for Republicans. Once again, Democrats in the White House and Congress have demonstrated that they do not understand simple economics. Nor do they understand how to create jobs. This year we have an opportunity to elect Republicans at all levels of government who desire to transform our country into a strong and prosperous nation we can be proud of. Thus, we should embrace the primary season as a time to meet, evaluate, and support our Republican candidates!
